· "RAY film soundtrack" - Ray Charles

Ray Charles Robinson (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004), known by his stage name Ray Charles, was a blind musician. He brought a soulful sound to country music and pop standards through his Modern Sounds recordings, as well as a rendition of "America the Beautiful" that Ed Bradley of 60 Minutes called the "definitive version of the song, an American anthem — a classic, just as the man who sang it." He also appeared in the 1980 hit movie, The Blues Brothers. Frank Sinatra called him "the only true genius in the business". In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Charles number ten on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time and also voted him number two on their November 2008 list of The 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. Charles himself was significantly involved in the biopic Ray, an October 2004 film which portrays his life and career between 1930 and 1966 and stars Jamie Foxx as Charles. Foxx won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Actor for the role. The very heart and soul of telling Ray Charles' story had to be his music, which is why Taylor Hackford decided to evoke the emotions and events of Ray's life as much as possible through the power of his songs. All the songs are included in the Ray movie soundtrack. From the beginning, Hackford had made a list of the key songs he wanted to appear in the film. Taylor Hackford on the Ray movie soundtrack: "Musically, this film was a very complicated piece. We were using some 40 different songs throughout the film, and using them to tell a story, so when the music ends, the mood is carried over and vice versa. When a song is on-screen, you're seeing that the song came from the emotion and the drama in his life and that the two are necessarily intertwined and related." To help with the task of recreating Ray Charles' music with all the vitality and electric vibrancy it had from the get-go, Hackford brought in musical supervisor Curt Sobel, who was drawn to the scope and what he sees as the importance of the Ray movie soundtrack. "I think Ray Charles was crucial to the history of 20th century culture," says Sobel. "He was the first person to succeed in pooling together everything great about our country's music, the feeling of Gospel, the joy of Boogie-Woogie, the depth of Blues, and turning it into something very unique."

· "The Best of Invisible" - Invisible

After the ending of Pescado Rabioso, Luis Alberto Spinetta founded Invisible together with Héctor "Pomo" Lorenzo in drums and Carlos Alberto "Machi" Rufino in bass and vocals. The first public gig of Invisible was at the Astral Theater, in Buenos Aires, on November 23, 1973 and on the following year they edited their first single plus their first album. The group was working hard during rehearsals and only was appearing at big theaters or stadiums, but never in festivals or small places. After a long silence, they change record company (they went from Talent - Microfón to CBS), and presented Durazno Sangrando, their second LP released in 1975, at the Coliseo Theater on November 21 and on 22 of that same year. El Jardín de Los Presentes, their third and last LP, saw the light in 1976 and it was when Tomás Gubitsch joined to the band, as second guitarist. The album would become in one of the best of the Argentine Rock in his "third cycle" (1976 - 1982) and it was characterized by the merger of rhythms and genres. The album also obtained an immediate massive success and began to show of entry as a classic album, full of songs featuring an unusual beauty. If any Spinetta disc always hoards at least one beautiful song, in the case of "El Jardín..." almost all the topics approach the perfection. The album would be presented on August 6 at the Luna Park Stadium. This material has a clear influence of rock mixed with modern tango, which was in heyday in Buenos Aires during that time frame. Such it is like that, that for his live presentation (which would be the last one of the band), summoned the virtuoso bandoneonista Rodolfo Mederos. Invisible gave their last live show on December 12, 1976 at the Luna Parl. At the beginning of 1977, the group broke up.

· "You'll Never Walk Alone" - Gerry & The Pacemakers

Gerry & The Pacemakers were a British rock and roll group during the 1960s. In common with The Beatles, they came from Liverpool and were managed by Brian Epstein. They are most remembered for being the first act to reach number one in the UK Singles Chart with their first three single releases. It was a record that was not equalled for 20 years, until the mid-80s success of fellow Liverpool band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Gerry Marsden formed the group in 1959 with his brother, Fred, Les Chadwick and Arthur McMahon. They rivalled the Beatles early in their career, playing in the same areas of Hamburg, Germany and Liverpool, England. McMahon (known as Arthur Mack) was replaced on piano by Les Maguire around 1961. They are known to have rehearsed at Cammell Laird shipping yard at Birkenhead. The band was the second to sign with Brian Epstein, who later signed them with Columbia Records (a sister label to The Beatles label Parlophone under EMI). They began recording in early 1963 with "How Do You Do It?", a song written by Mitch Murray that Adam Faith had turned down and one that The Beatles chose not to release (they did record the song but insisted on releasing their own song "[Love Me Do]"). The song was produced by George Martin and became a number one hit in the UK, until being replaced at the top by "From Me to You", The Beatles' third single. Gerry & The Pacemakers' next two singles, Murray's "I Like It" and Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone", both also reached number one in the UK Singles Chart. "You'll Never Walk Alone" had been a favourite of Gerry Marsden's since seeing Carousel growing up (he turned down the Beatles' "Hello Little Girl" for this slot, which then became the first hit for The Fourmost). It soon became the signature tune of Liverpool Football Club. To this day, the song remains a football anthem, there and elsewhere, a phenomenon due to Gerry Marsden, rather than its Broadway composers. Despite this early success, Gerry & The Pacemakers never had another number one single in the UK. By late 1965, their popularity was rapidly declining on both sides of the Atlantic. They disbanded in October 1966, with much of their latter recorded material never released in the UK.

· "Quelqu'un M'a Dit" - Carla Bruni

Originally best-known as an Italian-born model, Carla Bruni has matured into a remarkably talented and self-possessed singer-composer-guitarist. Her debut album, sung mostly in French, could best be described as neo-chanson. Bruni's whispery, wobbly, husky voice, wryly deadpan delivery and introspective lyrics recall Francoise Hardy, Barbara, Jane Birkin and Nico. But unlike her forebears, who so often posed as waif-like child-women and doormat-like victims of passion, Bruni remains firmly on top. Her lyrics can and do celebrate true love but she also praises the delights of female sexual empowerment in no uncertain terms, as on "J'en Connais". Musically, the tunes range from folk Français to echoes of le jazz hot to bluesy torch numbers. The spare, mostly acoustic instrumentation is unfussy and atmospheric, while the I-couldn't-care-less ambience is occasionally punctuated by chimes, insouciant whistling or an impudent, sly giggle. Rarely does an album come along that touches everyone who listens to it, even those that do not speak the language in which it was recorded. Quelqu’un M’a Dit captures you with the first note and leaves you humming the last. The Franco-Italian model-singer-songwriter sings of love and loves lost with the ability to evoke powerful images across any language barrier.

· "The Buddy Holly Collection" - Buddy Holly

Charles Hardin Holley, known professionally as Buddy Holly (September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959) was an American singer-songwriter and a pioneer of rock and roll. Although his success lasted only a year and a half before his death in an airplane crash, Holly is described by critic Bruce Eder as "the single most influential creative force in early rock and roll." His works and innovations inspired and influenced both his contemporaries and later musicians, notably The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan, and exerted a profound influence on popular music. Holly was in the first group of inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Holly #13 among "The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time".

"Best of..." - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Creedence Clearwater Revival were an American rock band who gained popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a number of successful singles drawn from various albums. The group consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist and primary lyricist John Fogerty, rhythm guitarist and brother of John, Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford. Their musical style encompassed rock and roll and swamp rock genres. Despite their San Francisco origins, they are sometimes also cited as southern rock stylists. CCR's music is still a staple of American and worldwide radio airplay and often figures in various media. John Fogerty, Doug Clifford, and Stu Cook (all born 1945) met at senior high school in El Cerrito, California and began playing instrumentals and "juke box standards" together under the name The Blue Velvets. By 1964, the band had signed to Fantasy Records, an independent jazz label based in San Francisco at the time. For the band's first release, however, Fantasy co-owner Max Weiss renamed the group The Golliwogs (after the children's literary character, Golliwogg), apparently to cash in on a wave of popular British bands with similar names. In 1967, Saul Zaentz purchased Fantasy Records from Weiss and offered the band a chance to record a full-length album, but only if the group changed its name. Zaentz and the band agreed to come up with ten suggestions each, but he enthusiastically agreed to their first: Creedence Clearwater Revival. The resulting 1968 debut album Creedence Clearwater Revival struck a responsive note with the emerging underground pop culture press, which touted CCR as a band worthy of attention. While undertaking a steady string of live dates around the country to capitalize on their breakthrough, CCR also was hard at work on their second album Bayou Country at RCA Studios in Los Angeles. Released in January 1969 and becoming a #7 platinum hit, the record was the first in a string of hit albums and singles which continued uninterrupted for the next three years.. Creedence's following album, Willy and the Poor Boys, was released in November 1969. 1969 had been a remarkable chart year for the band: three Top Ten albums, four hit singles (charting at #2, #2, #2, and #3, respctively) with three additional charting B-sides. Just after the new year, 1970, CCR released yet another new double-sided 45, "Travelin' Band"/"Who'll Stop the Rain". The band also recorded its January 31, 1970, live performance at the Coliseum in Oakland, California, which would later be marketed as a live album and television special. In April 1970, Creedence was set to begin its first European tour. The band returned to Wally Heider's San Francisco studio in June to record what many consider the finest CCR album, Cosmo's Factory. The album, eleven songs in all, was Creedence's best seller and went straight to #1 on the Billboard 200 album charts and #11 on Billboard's Soul Albums chart. The Cosmo's Factory sessions had seen the stirrings of tensions within the foursome as the incessant touring and heavy recording schedules took their toll. John had taken control of the group in its business matters and its artistic output, feeling that a 'democratic' process would threaten their success. Pendulum, released in December 1970, was another top seller, but the album marked yet another shift in the band's approach: gone was the wall of sound of Creedence's previous three albums. The single's flip side, the ringing "Hey Tonight", was also a hit. But even continued musical innovation and success could not resolve the differences between John and Tom Fogerty. During the recording of Pendulum Tom Fogerty left Creedence Clearwater Revival permanently. His departure was made public in February 1971. The band members considered replacing Tom but never did. In spring 1971, John Fogerty informed a startled Cook and Clifford the band would continue only by adopting a 'democratic' approach: each member would now write and sing his own material. Fogerty also would contribute only rhythm guitar to his bandmates' songs. Cook and Clifford, who had wanted more of a voice in the band's music and business decisions, resisted this arrangement. Fogerty insisted they accept the new arrangement, or he would quit the band. In spite of their continuing commercial success, however, relations among the three had become increasingly strained. The band's final album, Mardi Gras, was released in April 1972, featuring songs written by Fogerty, Cook, and Clifford and one cover by Gene Pitney "Hello Mary Lou". It received mostly poor, even savage reviews, and suffered comparatively weak sales. Finally, on October 16, 1972 - less than six months later - Fantasy Records and the band officially announced the disbanding of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

·"Greatest Hits" - Stray Cats

The Stray Cats are a rockabilly band formed in 1979 by guitarist/vocalist Brian Setzer (Bloodless Pharaohs/Brian Setzer Orchestra) with school friends Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom in the Long Island town of Massapequa, New York. The group had several hit singles in the UK and the U.S. during the early 1980s. The group, whose style was based upon the sounds of Sun Records artists from the 1950s and heavily influenced by Bill Haley & His Comets, had little initial success in the New York music scene. When Setzer heard that there was a revival of the 1950s Teddy Boy youth subculture in England, the band moved to the UK. After a gig in London, Stray Cats met producer Dave Edmunds, well known as a roots rock enthusiast for his work with Rockpile and as a solo artist. Edmunds offered to work with the group, and they entered the studio to record their self-titled debut album, Stray Cats, released in England in 1981 on Arista Records. They had three hits that year with "Runaway Boys", "Rock This Town," and "Stray Cat Strut." The UK follow-up to Stray Cats, Gonna Ball, was not as well-received, providing no hits. But the combined sales of their first two albums was enough to convince EMI America to compile the best tracks from the two UK albums and issue an album (Built for Speed) in the U.S. in 1982. Personality conflicts began to emerge in the ways that the individual members handled their new-found success; Phantom married actress Britt Ekland, while Setzer made guest appearances with stars like Bob Dylan and Stevie Nicks and became the concert guitarist for Robert Plant's Honeydrippers side project. In late 1984, Setzer broke up the band. Rocker and Phantom formed a trio called Phantom Rocker & Slick (the "Slick" being former David Bowie guitarist Earl Slick), while Setzer went on to a solo career, exchanging his rockabilly focus for a more wide-ranging roots rock/Americana sound on albums such as 1986's The Knife Feels Like Justice.

·"Paco Ibáñez Canta a Brassens" - Paco Ibáñez

Francisco "Paco" Ibáñez is a Spanish singer and musician born in Valencia on November 20, 1934, before the Spanish Civil War. He went to France in 1952 during the Franco dictatorship in Spain and recorded his first album in 1964. During the events in France of May 1968, he performed in the Sorbonne and became known as a rebel artist. He never composed his own lyrics, but used famous poems, like those of Federico García Lorca, Rafael Alberti or Miguel Hernández. He also sang compositions from Georges Brassens, and here's that mythic LP.

· "2120 South Michigan Avenue, The Chess Sessions 1964-65" - The Rolling Stones

When Chess Records was founded (as Aristocrat in 1947), the company did not have a recording studio, and over the following decade it recorded most of its artists at Universal Recording Studio (at various locales in Chicago). Finally, the company established a first-rate in-house studio – called Chess Studios – in 1957, when it relocated to 2120 South Michigan Avenue. The studio featured a set of matched echo chambers. In 1958, Chess hired Malcolm Chisholm, who had been the engineer for a considerable number of recordings for Chess when the company was recording at Universal, as sound engineer. When he left, he was replaced in 1960 by Ron Malo, who stayed with the studio until its demise in 1975. Malo upgraded the studio and ran the sound into dual echo chambers in the basement. That’s the reason why almost all the Chess artists were recorded with echo, sometimes to excess. Among the legendary blues and rock ’n’ roll artists recorded in this studio were Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson II, Howlin’ Wolf, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. The company also built an impressive jazz series, and recorded such artists as the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Ahmad Jamal and Sonny Stitt. Malo supervised the engineering at recording sessions for most of the company’s artists, which by the 1960s meant primarily soul artists: Etta James, the Dells and Billy Stewart, for example. Malo was also the engineer for many sessions with outside artists. In June 1964 the Rolling Stones, seeking to emulate the sound of their legendary blues heroes, came to Chicago to record at the Chess studio; the studio produced half of the tracks on their USA album 12x5, and even one of the songs on that album was titled in tribute ‘2120 South Michigan Avenue.’ The Rolling Stones subsequently recorded about 20 more tracks at Chess during 1964-65. So here are, most of them directly transferred from the original stereo master tapes for the first time, those songs from the three Rolling Stones’ recording sessions at Chess Studios including such gems as “Goodbye Girl” (the first song written by Bill Wyman which was recorded on November 1964 but never released); the never released blues standard “Key To The Highway”; or the unreleased 1964 version of “Mercy, Mercy”; as well as the rare original stereo mix of “Satisfaction”.

· "Original Sun Greatests Hits" - Carl Perkins

Carl Lee Perkins (April 9, 1932 – January 19, 1998) was an American pioneer of rockabilly music who recorded most notably at Sun Records Studio in Memphis, Tennessee beginning in 1954. An outstanding performer, his contribution to rock and roll music is still heard to this day, especially through his fine compositions and guitar playing. His best known song is "Blue Suede Shoes." According to Charlie Daniels, "Carl Perkins' songs personified the rockabilly era, and Carl Perkins' sound personifies the rockabilly sound more so than anybody involved in it, because he never changed." Perkins' songs were recorded by artists (and friends) as influential as Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and Johnny Cash, which further cemented his place in the history of popular music. Called the King of Rockabilly, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll, the Rockabilly, and the Nashville Songwriters Halls of Fame; and was a Grammy Hall of Fame Award recipient.

· "Led Zeppelin IV" - Led Zeppelin

The untitled fourth album by English rock band Led Zeppelin was released on 8 November 1971. It has no official title printed anywhere on the album, and is generally referred to as Led Zeppelin IV after the band's previous three numbered albums. Atlantic Records catalogs have used the names Four Symbols and The Fourth Album. It has also been referred to as Zoso (which the first symbol appears to spell), Untitled and Runes. Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page frequently refers to the album in interviews as "the fourth album" and Led Zeppelin IV, while singer Robert Plant thinks of it as "the fourth album, that's it". Upon its release, Led Zeppelin IV was a huge commercial and critical success. Most of the album's songs are staples on classic rock radio stations, including "Black Dog", "Rock and Roll", "Stairway to Heaven", "Misty Mountain Hop", "Going to California", and "When the Levee Breaks". The album is one of the best-selling albums in history at 37 million units. It has shifted over 23 million units in the United States alone, putting it third on the all-time list. In 2003, the album was ranked 66th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

· "Elvis at Sun" - Elvis Presley

Elvis at Sun is a compilation of Elvis Presley's studio recordings at Sun Studio from 1953 to 1955. This set features master recordings made by Presley and his accompanists, Scotty Moore (guitar) and Bill Black (bass), occasionally augmented by other musicians (Jimmie Lott – drums on track 8; Johnny Bernero – drums on tracks 9, 18, 19), prior to his arrival on RCA Records in 1956. Unfortunately tapes for at least two songs have been lost forever, those are Sun versions of "I Got A Woman" (which would be recorded for Presley during his first RCA session) and "Satisfied". All of these studio recordings were produced by Sam Phillips, the owner of Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis is a melting pot of many types of music: both black music (blues, rhythm & blues, gospel) and white music (country & western, hillbilly), the recordings reflect these influences. Phillips released Presley's recording contract to RCA in 1955 for the substantial sum of $35,000. This also gave RCA the rights to all of Presley's masters recorded at Sun. These legendary recordings include "That's All Right (Mama)," one of candidates for being "the first rock and roll record." Elvis' entire period at Sun is one of the seminal events in the birth of rock and roll, specifically also the beginning of the sub-genre known as rockabilly. Two tracks from the Presley's Sun sessions were included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll: "Mystery Train," and "That's All Right." In 2002, given their importance in the development of American popular music, The Sun Sessions tapes were chosen, by the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, to be kept as a bequeathal to posterity.

· "Chambre Avec Vue" - Henri Salvador

Audiences will embrace Henri Salvador like he's a Grandpa Moses of bossa nova. It's not every day that an eightysomething crooner steps out of the obscurity with an album of warm-as-fresh-pastry cabaret music. Of course, Salvador is no Henri-come-lately. He's famous in France and francophone former colonies (like his native Cayenne, French Guiana) and has decades of television and recording work to his credit. Now, it's time for worldwide listeners to play catch-up. This album was reportedly recorded on the verge of Salvador's retirement, and though the sound is classique, many of the songs are of recent vintage. Salvador's charming, half-spoken vocals will resound with listeners familiar with the suave stylings of cabaret practitioners such as Charles Trenet and Walter Hyatt. There's also a bit of Danny Kaye in his phrasing on the album's lighter fare, like the brass-band-flavored "Mademoiselle"--no surprise given Salvador's extensive comedic résumé. Younger audiences primed by the ironic, sophisticated grooves of Dimitiri from Paris and Money Mark will delight in much of the instrumentation here. The album is, in fact, a triumph of production and arranging. Full orchestras are cued, at times, at the same volume as a single instrument, reduced to the level of pure atmosphere. One track, "Il fait Dimanche," has a funky vamp that demands to be sampled for the contemporary dance floor. Another, "Faire des ronds dans l'eau," subsists on strummed guitar and a trap set, with the occasional gypsy-style, savory violin part added for spice. Throughout, Salvador presents himself as an astute, sympathetic performer. On "Je sais que tu sais" it's hard to tell where his whispered voice ends and the drummer's light brushes begin. Apparently, swingers--in the jazz sense of the word--get better with age.

· "Rocket to Russia" - The Ramones

Rocket to Russia is the third album by American punk group the Ramones, their last with original drummer Tommy Ramone. Released on November 4, 1977, the album incorporates surf rock and other influences. It includes some of the Ramones' best-known songs, including "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" and "Teenage Lobotomy". In 2003, the album was ranked number 105 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The album was recorded in late August 1977 at Media Sound studios in Midtown Manhattan. The cost of recording Rocket to Russia was roughly $25,000, which was significantly higher than that of the band's two previous records. At the request of guitarist Johnny Ramone, "Punk Magazine" editor and illustrator John Holmstrom produced the sleeve art, a cartoonish view of the world from a rocketship with a pinhead, emblematic of the band, grabbing onto it. In 1978, the album peaked at #49 on the Billboard pop albums chart, making it one of the band's most popular releases. On June 19, 2001, Rhino Records re-released the album. In addition to remastering the tracks from the original album, it included alternate versions of album tracks as well as a B-side, and that is the following…

· "The Best of Capitol Years" - Frank Sinatra

The Best of Capitol Years includes Sinatra's finest recordings from the most consistently accomplished era of his career. Twenty songs worth of swinging standards and bittersweet saloon pop, the music Sinatra made after his career and personal life had crashed and singing was all he had left. His masterful baritone and remarkable phrasing here work in perfect combination with arrangements that swing and swell to the heartbeat of loves lost and found. It is these performances for which Sinatra will be forever remembered, for surely, no one has ever created music more beautiful than this.

· "Fragile" - Yes

Recorded in September 1971 at Advision Studios in London, Fragile is the fourth album by the British progressive rock band Yes, released on Atlantic Records, catalogue 7211. It was the band's first album with keyboardist Rick Wakeman after the departure of Tony Kaye, and the first to feature cover art by Roger Dean, his work emblematic of both the band and progressive rock as a whole. The album is an analog multi-track production. Standard multi-track methods were employed, such as overdubbing, including a flipping of the master tape to record the backwards piano, cued by Howe's guitar, for the beginning of "Roundabout." Fragile was issued in the UK in November 1971, but was held back in North America for two months because of the chart momentum of The Yes Album. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 during a stay of 46 weeks, and as Atlantic 2401 019 reached #7 in the UK album chart. Its best known track, "Roundabout," was released in the United States in an edited version as a single.

· "The Great Twenty-Eight" - Chuck Berry

Charles Edward "Chuck" Berry (born October 18, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. Chuck Berry is an influential figure and one of the pioneers of rock and roll music. According to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's website, "While no individual can be said to have invented rock and roll, Chuck Berry comes the closest of any single figure to being the one who put all the essential pieces together." Cub Koda wrote, "Of all the early breakthrough rock & roll artists, none is more important to the development of the music than Chuck Berry. He is its greatest songwriter, the main shaper of its instrumental voice, one of its greatest guitarists, and one of its greatest performers." John Lennon was more succinct: "If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry'." Berry was among the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on its opening in 1986. He received Kennedy Center Honors in 2000 in a "class" with Mikhail Baryshnikov, Plácido Domingo, Angela Lansbury, and Clint Eastwood. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Chuck Berry #5 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. He was also ranked 6th on Rolling Stone's Rolling Stone's 100 greatest guitarists of All Time. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame included three of Chuck Berry's songs ("Johnny B. Goode", "Maybellene", "Rock and Roll Music"), of the 500 songs that shaped Rock and Roll. The Great Twenty-Eight is a greatest hits album by classic rock and roller Chuck Berry, released in 1982. In 2003, the album was ranked number 21 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

· "Vinicius de Moraes en 'La Fusa' con María Creuza y Toquinho" - Vinicius

Vinicius de Moraes is probably the greatest Brazilian poet and musician of all times. His songs are delicious, deep and calming. He was the link between the old guard of poets and the new generation songwriters and singers. While he was a friend of great poets like Manuel Bandeira, he was also a friend/partner of new singers (at that time) like Toquinho, Chico, and Tom Jobim. This CD contain some of the best (and most well know) Brazilian songs. If you like or are interested in Brazilian music, you certainly should add this to your collection.

· "Selling England by the Pound" - Genesis

Selling England by the Pound is the fifth studio album by Genesis and was recorded and released in 1973. It followed Foxtrot and was the band's commercial peak with Peter Gabriel, hitting # 3 in the UK where it remained on the charts for 21 weeks. The album went gold in the US in 1990. The album cover is a painting by Betty Swanwick called The Dream. The original painting did not feature a lawn mower; the band had Swanwick add it later as an allusion to the song "I Know What I Like." Retaining the pastoral yearning for ancient or medieval England as its primary thematic material, the album focuses on traces of this past in the present. Songs about England's mythological past ("Dancing With the Moonlit Knight") co-exist with sketches of contemporary lawnmowers ("I Know What I Like"), and the centrepiece of the second side, the epic "Cinema Show", has two lovers serve as reincarnations of ancient Greek figures in a way which is almost directly out of the "Fire Sermon" scene in T. S. Eliot's long poem The Waste Land. The musical performances are much more polished and tight than on the preceding LPs, and musical diversions are more often unified into the general song structure. A digitally remastered version was released on CD in 1994 on Virgin in Europe and on Atlantic Records in the US and Canada, and it's now featured here.

· "Selección Porteña - Vol. 1" - Carlos Gardel

Carlos Gardel (Charles Romuald Gardes, 11 December 1890 Toulouse, France - 24 June 1935 Medellín, Colombia) is perhaps the most prominent figure in the history of tango. Although his birthplace is disputed between Uruguay and France, he lived and grown up in Argentina since the age of two and acquired Argentine citizenship in 1923. When asked about his nationality, Gardel would answer, “I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of two years and a half...” It is thought that Gardel used to give evasive answers in order to hide the circumstances of his birth to a single mother, Berthe Gardes, since apparently he was son of an illegitimate father who belonged to a healthy French family from Toulouse. Gardel grew up in the Abasto neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, located near the Central Market of Fruit and Vegetables, an enormous art-deco styled building which today is a shopping mall. Gardel created the tango-canción in 1917 with his rendition of Pascual Contursi and Samuel Castriotta’s "Mi Noche Triste". The recording sold 10,000 copies (In 1917!!!)and was a hit all throughout Latin America. Gardel went on tour through Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Colombia, and also made several appearances in Paris, Nice, Barcelona, Madrid and New York. He sold 70,000 records in the first three months of his 1928 visit to Paris. As his popularity grew, he made a number of films for Paramount, first in France and then in the U.S. While sentimental films such as El día que me quieras or Cuesta abajo lack lasting dramatic value, they were outstanding showcases of his tremendous singing talents and moviestar looks. He died in an airplane crash at the height of his career, becoming an archetypal tragic hero mourned throughout Latin America. The unerring musicality of Gardel’s baritone voice and the dramatic phrasing of his lyrics made miniature masterpieces of his hundreds of three-minute tango recordings. For many, Gardel embodies the soul of the tango style that originated in the barrios of Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th century. He is commonly referred to as “Carlitos” (Charly), “The King of Tango”, “El Mago” (The Magician) and, ironically “El Mudo” (The Mute).
