·"The Who Remembers The High Numbers" - The Who

The Who first began in 1963. In their early days the band was known as The Detours. Like many of their British peers, the group was heavily influenced by American blues and country music, initially playing mostly rhythm and blues. The Detours became The Who in late 1964 and, also with the arrival of Keith Moon that year, their line-up was complete. However, for a short period during earl-mid 1964, and under the management of Peter Meaden, they changed their name to The High Numbers. This is a bootleg CD, with studio and live material from that period. Tracks 1-5 are their first studio efforts including their first single as The High Numbers, they released "Zoot Suit/I'm The Face", a record designed to appeal to their mostly Mod fans. When it failed to chart, the band fired Meaden and quickly reverted to The Who. They had also changed from The High Numbers to The Who because when they would have concerts, old ladies would come thinking that they could play bingo (and it's true! lol). Tracks 6-16 are live recorded at the Railway Hotel with decent sound considering the era. The tracks don't flow smoothly and some cut in and out abruptly. Some sound like there is an audience while others don't. Tracks 17-23 are mono studio tracks. These are all instrumental, actually recorded in Abbey Road Studios during that summer.

BBC Sessions by The Who was released 15 February 2000 on Polydor Records and MCA Records. It contains 24 tracks and 2 jingles recorded live at the BBC studios in London. With the exception of the jingles being used to bookend the album, and the third track being misplaced, these Who's recordings are presented here in strict chronological order.

· "The Who Sell Out" - The Who

"The Who Sell Out" is the third album by The Who, released in 1967. It is a concept album, formatted as a collection of unrelated songs interspersed with faux commercials and public service announcements. The album purports to be a broadcast by pirate radio station Radio London. Part of the intended irony of the title was that The Who were actually making commercials during that period of their career, some of which are included as bonus tracks on the remastered CD. The album's release was reportedly followed by a bevy of lawsuits due to the mention of real-world commercial interests in the faux commercials and on the album covers, and by the makers of the real jingles (Radio London jingles), who claimed The Who used them without permission. (The jingles were produced by PAMS Productions of Dallas, Texas, which created thousands of station ID jingles in the 1960s and 1970s.) In 2003, the album was ranked number 113 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

· "A Quick One" - The Who

"A Quick One" is the second album by The Who, released in 1966. American record company executives released the album under the title Happy Jack, rather than the sexually suggestive title of the UK release, and due to "Happy Jack" being a top forty hit in the U.S. "Happy Jack" was not included on the UK version of the album, but instead was released as a non-album single. This is widely regarded by fans to have been a pivotal album for the group, due to the departure from the R&B / pop formula featured on the band's first release. Part of the marketing push for the album was a requirement that each band member should write at least two of the songs on it (although Roger Daltrey only wrote one), so this Who album is the least dominated by Pete Townshend's writing. The album was also the band's first foray into the form of rock opera, with "A Quick One, While He's Away", the title track of the LP, a nine-minute suite of song snippets telling a story of infidelity and reconciliation. The Who would later go on to write and record the full scale rock operas "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia". The album was intended to be pop music, a sonic participant in the pop art movement. The cover was designed by the pop art exponent Alan Aldridge, with the front cover depicting the band playing their instruments. The album was recorded at IBC Studios, Pye Studios and Regent Sound, in London, England in 1966. Kit Lambert was the producer. In 2003, the album was ranked number 383 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

The bonus material on disc 2 leans equally heavily on covers, but also contains its share of signposts to the future Who, including a rare alternate version of “Anyhow, Anyway, Anywhere” (a true collector's item) accompanied with more loads of tracks for the first-time in stereo. In fact, 28 out of the total 30 tracks on this double CD album are in stereo! Disc 2 also contains previously unreleased, full-length versions of “The Good's Gone” and “I Don't Mind”, an unreleased instrumental version of “My Generation” and the aforementioned and unspeakably rare, French EP-only alternate version of “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere”. It's kind of odd that the Who's first album would be the last to be reissued in deluxe fashion, but, given the prominent role the late John Entwistle plays on it (his instrumental 'The Ox' was and is a sonic marvel), it's kind of fitting, too. But the real reason it took so long for the Who camp to release this is that they added so much to it! Disc one presents the original album mixed in stereo for the first time since 1965 by original producer Shel Talmy, plus single sides like 'Bald Headed Woman' and Daddy Rolling Stone.'
